I spent August counting down the days until Hawkeye football was back on the TV. I may be surrounded by Alabama fans here in the South, but I’ll be at Kinnick Stadium in spirit this season.
Here’s your monthly recap:
Best Book I Read This Month
I have a few quibbles, but We Are What We Eat: A Slow Food Manifesto is a thought-provoking read. Penned by Alice Waters, one of the founders of the farm-to-table movement, the book certainly gets the reader to think about their consumption habits. You can find it here.
Best Article I Read This Month
You have the right to be rude to the police. Am I arguing it’s the best route? No. As tempting as it may be, there are better (and godlier) ways of handling corrupt law enforcement. Regardless, folks still have the right to be rude. Click here to read a story about police deciding to ignore that right.
Tip + Trick of the Month
If you have a sum of money allocated for something like an emergency fund, you may need the money easily accessible in the future so investing isn’t the right option...but neither is leaving it in your typical savings account. Instead, you should be using a high-yield savings account that will put your money to work for you earning interest while still being easily transferred. And with interest rates where they are, now is the perfect time to set up an account and get earning.
I’m reluctant to broadcast which account I use across the internet. But if you have any questions about setting one up, would like recommendations on good options, or if you would like my referral code to earn higher interest rates, feel free to send me a message!
Quote of the Month
“I’ve learned over the years that devotion isn’t reliant on how spiritually powerful we feel we are. If we have seconds, minutes, and hours in our day, then we can devote our lives to a living affection for God. Because devotion is about making space, and we all have it in some shape or form.” -Strahan Coleman, Beholding
Kelvey’s Thought for the Month
A very surface-level thought for this month (which is a great pun for this particular topic...), but I recently drove into Atlanta for the afternoon to visit the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere. The Georgia Aquarium isn’t just known for its size—it’s also one of the only aquariums in the world that is home to whale sharks.
Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the sea. Found in all the world’s tropical oceans, they are filter feeders that can grow to more than 40 feet while weighing in at 11 tons.
Visiting this month was particularly fitting as August also brought International Whale Shark Day. To celebrate, I want to share this wonderful video from Georgia Aquarium documenting the care of their two half-grown giants, Yushan and Taroko.
Enjoy your September! I’ll catch you next month.
